#DATING: How to protect your MENTAL HEALTH while swiping away on these apps

Online dating can be a great way to meet new people and have users bubbling with anticipation and excitement at the possibilities. But experts at the dating app Fluttr point out that around 50% of online matches don’t message back, and that can leave users feeling insecure and rejected. So how do you protect your mental health while looking for love - or a date - online?

Rhonda Alexander, CEO of Fluttr, shares these tips:

Don’t seek validation from the apps - If you feel really down and sad if you don’t hear from a match, Rhonda says you might be looking for validation through your dating app. But since research shows there’s a 50/50 chance a match won’t message you back - and you can’t really control that - you shouldn’t use the platform to validate yourself.

Stop people pleasing - Some online daters agree with everything a match says and cling to every message because they’re afraid the other person will lose interest if they don’t, but it’s not healthy. Dedicating time to finding love is great, Rhonda says, just “make sure pleasing other people doesn’t take priority over your own wellbeing.”

Deal with rejection - It’s never easy, but dealing with rejection after presenting the best version of yourself online? That can be even harder, but rejection happens a lot on dating apps. And when it does, Rhonda says it’s best to accept it, talk it out with loved ones to make sense of it, then move on and heal, so you’re ready to meet the next match.

Remember you’re not disposable - Swiping through profiles of possible online matches can make it all feel depersonalized and getting ghosted by someone from a dating app can make you feel like you’re disposable. Rhonda’s advice? “Keep an open mind, be positive and have fun with the platforms,” she says, “but keep a focus on matching with care to forge meaningful connections.”
